Here you’ll read about 3 basic types of logo design we offer. When you’re looking to build a strong business or organization, a solid logo design is a must. A great logo design can can create loyal followers through simplicity and memorability.
Text-Based Logo Design
Text-based logos include the company name (and/or URL) in uniquely styled type font. Visually, text logos are very simple, clean logos that aren’t cluttered with heavy visuals and graphics. These logos are often favored by Fortune 500 corporations. The design simplicity can be misleading as these logos can be very difficult to design.
Why consider a text-based logo design?
- legibility
- ease of recognition, when size is reduced or enlarge (ex: for printing your business cards or advertising on a billboard)
- ease of replication (ex: for using channel letters on a store front)
- corporate “big business” appeal
Iconic Logo Design
A few facts about good iconic logo design:
- An icon should be easily recognizable and memorable
- An icon should remain clear when reproduced in small sizes
- An icon is never a photograph or life-like representation of an object
- So, if it’s not a photo, then what can it be?
- a simple (and often clever) representation of an item associated with the company name, or a product or service the company promotes.
- geometric shapes, simple patterns, or initials representing the company or the company name
- an entirely new symbolic meaning (for ex: people did not originally associate the Nike “swoosh” with the company, but now they do).
Iconic logos feature simplified graphics (symbols) that reflect an aspect of the company. The symbol can be used:
- by itself, often called a symbol or icon
- with text, often called a combination mark
- with text integrated into the icon, often called an emblem
Can you tell what the following famous iconic logo designs are?
Answer key:
- The Adidas logo is a symbol, or icon (if you knew that was Adidas, bonus points for you!)
- The Starbucks Coffee logo design is an emblem, because the text is integrated into the design of the logo.
- The Domino’s Pizza logo is a combination mark, because it uses an icon and text together.
